X-Ray Cost in Norway
What you actually pay as egenandel at hospitals, contracted X-ray institutes and GP offices, how the frikort works, and what private self-pay imaging costs. Last reviewed October 2026.
Short answer: how much does an X-ray cost in Norway?
With a referral, a publicly funded X-ray costs a fixed user fee (egenandel) of NOK 387 (about $40) at a public hospital or at a private X-ray institute with a public agreement, or NOK 287 (about $30) if your GP office takes it. The same NOK 387 applies to CT, MRI and ultrasound. Every fee counts toward the 2026 ceiling of NOK 3,278, after which further covered care is free for the rest of the year, and everyone under 18 pays nothing. Paying fully privately, a plain X-ray costs from about NOK 1,950 (about $205).
Quick Overview
Norway has a tax-funded public health service run by four regional health authorities (Helse Sør-Øst, Helse Vest, Helse Midt-Norge and Helse Nord). Helfo handles reimbursements and the national user-fee rules. Imaging is done at hospital radiology departments and at private X-ray institutes such as Unilabs and Evidia, many of which have agreements that let them charge only the public egenandel. A February 2026 commentary in the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association noted that about two-thirds of Norway's roughly 600,000 outpatient MRI scans a year are done at private institutes with such agreements. All approved user fees count toward one annual ceiling (egenandelstak), which is NOK 3,278 in 2026; after that Helfo gives you a frikort automatically.

X-Ray Prices in Norway by Exam: Public vs Private
The public egenandel is a flat fee per examination, so it does not change with the body part. Private institutes publish one standard X-ray price with a lower add-on price (tilleggsundersøkelse) for a second exam on the same referral. The private column uses Unilabs' price list valid from 1 January 2026, which matches Evidia's published "from" prices for X-ray and ultrasound.

FAQ
How much does an X-ray cost in Norway?
With a referral, a publicly funded X-ray costs a fixed user fee (egenandel) of NOK 387 (about $40) at a hospital or at a private X-ray institute with a public agreement, or NOK 287 (about $30) when done at a GP office. The fee counts toward the 2026 frikort ceiling of NOK 3,278. Paying fully privately, a plain X-ray costs from about NOK 1,950 (about $205) at Unilabs or Evidia.
What is the egenandel for røntgen, CT, MR and ultrasound in 2026?
Helsenorge lists one fee of NOK 387 per examination for X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound at public hospitals and at X-ray institutes that have an agreement with Helfo and a regional health authority. At a hospital outpatient clinic the imaging fee is charged in addition to a NOK 443 specialist consultation fee if you also see a doctor. Inpatients pay no user fees.
What is the frikort ceiling (egenandelstak) for 2026?
The 2026 egenandelstak is NOK 3,278. Approved user fees from GPs, legevakt, outpatient clinics, X-ray institutes, laboratories, physiotherapy, patient travel and blue-prescription medicines all count toward it. Once you reach it, you get a frikort automatically and pay no further approved user fees for the rest of the calendar year. You can follow your total under Frikort og egenandeler on helsenorge.no.
How much does a private X-ray or MRI cost in Norway?
Self-pay prices from 1 January 2026 at Unilabs are NOK 1,950 for an X-ray, NOK 2,600 for a whole-spine X-ray, NOK 3,700 for MRI without contrast (NOK 4,700 with contrast), NOK 2,950 for CT without contrast (NOK 3,950 with contrast) and NOK 2,600 for ultrasound. Evidia lists X-ray from NOK 1,950, CT from NOK 3,050, MRI from NOK 3,850 and ultrasound from NOK 2,600. These payments do not count toward the frikort.
Do I need a referral (henvisning) for an X-ray in Norway?
Yes. Helsenorge states that radiological examinations require a referral from a doctor, dentist, chiropractor or manual therapist. In practice your fastlege or the legevakt writes the referral and sends it electronically to a hospital or contracted X-ray institute. Private providers also generally ask for a referral for self-pay exams, so check before booking.
Are X-rays free for children and teenagers in Norway?
Yes. Children under 16 have long been exempt from user fees, and from 1 August 2026 the exemption was extended to everyone under 18, so 16- and 17-year-olds no longer pay the NOK 387 imaging fee or GP fees. Examinations related to pregnancy and childbirth are also free.
Do private X-rays count toward my frikort?
Only if the provider has an agreement with Helfo and a regional health authority; then you pay the standard NOK 387 user fee and it counts toward the NOK 3,278 ceiling. Institutions without an agreement set their own prices, payments do not count toward the frikort, and you pay even if you already hold one. They must tell you before the examination if you will pay the full cost.
Can tourists get an X-ray in Norway, and what do they pay?
Visitors from the EU/EEA, Switzerland and the UK who show a valid physical EHIC (or UK GHIC) and photo ID get medically necessary public care at the same user fees as residents, for example NOK 387 for an X-ray. The card does not cover private providers without a public agreement or trips made to get treatment. Visitors from outside these countries, such as US citizens, are not covered by the EHIC rules and should expect to pay themselves and claim on travel insurance.
How much is a dental panoramic (OPG) X-ray in Norway?
Dental care for adults is mostly paid privately in Norway, and dentists set their own prices. As an example, the Colosseum dental chain lists a panoramic X-ray (OPG) from NOK 885 (about $92), a single intraoral X-ray from NOK 110 and a 3D CBCT scan from NOK 1,300. Children and adolescents are covered by the public dental service (Den offentlige tannhelsetjenesten).
What happens if I miss my X-ray appointment?
A missed or late-cancelled appointment is charged and does not count toward the frikort. Helsenorge lists NOK 1,125 for X-ray institutes and NOK 1,993 for hospital outpatient appointments (somatic care) when you cancel less than 24 hours ahead; Unilabs quotes NOK 1,993 plus a NOK 25 fee. Cancel through helsenorge.no or the provider as early as possible.
