X-Ray Cost in Thailand
What you actually pay under the 30-baht Universal Coverage scheme, Social Security, at local private hospitals and at Bangkok's international hospitals. Last reviewed October 2026.
Short answer: how much does an X-ray cost in Thailand?
Thai citizens covered by Universal Coverage (the 30-baht gold card), Social Security or CSMBS get medically necessary X-rays free or for the ฿30 visit fee at their registered or participating hospital. Paying privately, a chest X-ray costs about ฿400–1,000 (about $12–30) at local private hospitals and clinics, and roughly ฿1,600–3,400 ($47–100) at international hospitals in Bangkok and Phuket. Public hospitals also see self-pay foreigners at lower prices than private hospitals.
Quick Overview
Thailand has three public health schemes: Universal Coverage (UCS, run by the National Health Security Office, NHSO) for most Thai citizens; Social Security (SSS, run by the Social Security Office) for private-sector employees; and the Civil Servant Medical Benefit Scheme (CSMBS) for government employees and their families. All three cover X-rays when a doctor orders them. Since 1 January 2025 the "30-baht Treat Anywhere" programme lets UCS members use their ID card at participating facilities beyond their registered hospital. Private hospitals range from local hospitals priced for Thai self-payers to JCI-accredited international hospitals that serve medical tourists at several times the price.

เอกซเรย์ปอด ราคาเท่าไหร่? (How much is a chest X-ray?)
In English: about ฿400–1,000 locally, ฿1,600–3,400 at international hospitals.
What is the 30-baht Treat Anywhere scheme?
It is an upgrade of Universal Coverage (UCS, the gold card) that lets members use their Thai ID card to get care at participating facilities outside their registered hospital. It started in four pilot provinces in January 2024 and covered all provinces from 1 January 2025. X-rays ordered as part of covered care are included; the visit fee is ฿30 or free depending on the patient's exemption status.
Does Thai Social Security cover X-rays?
Yes. Social Security (SSS) members — formal-sector employees, including foreign employees registered by their employer — get free medical care, including X-rays, at the hospital they selected, which can be public or private. Emergencies at other hospitals are covered under SSO rules.
How much is an MRI or CT scan in Thailand?
Medical-tourism invoice data from October 2026 put a chest MRI in Thailand at about ฿13,600–25,500 ($400–750) and a chest CT from about ฿17,000–23,500 ($500–690) at Bangkok private hospitals, with premium hospitals higher. Public hospitals charge much less, and UCS, SSS and CSMBS members are covered when the scan is medically necessary.
How much is an X-ray at Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital?
International hospitals such as Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej and BNH quote imaging prices on request. Medical-tourism data for Thai international hospitals give an average X-ray price of about ฿2,500 ($74), ranging from about ฿1,600 to ฿3,400, plus a doctor's fee if you see a specialist. Ask the international patient centre for a written estimate.
Can tourists get an X-ray at a Thai public hospital?
Yes. Public hospitals treat foreigners as self-pay patients, usually at far lower prices than international private hospitals, although waits are longer and English may be limited. Emergency care is given to everyone. Most tourists with travel insurance choose private hospitals, which bill insurers directly.
Do expats need health insurance in Thailand?
Expats working for a Thai employer are registered with Social Security. Retirees on certain long-stay visas (such as Non-Immigrant O-A) must hold health insurance meeting minimum cover, and most other expats buy private cover because UCS is only for Thai citizens.
